Chess Club

TOTNES CHESS CLUB

We are a friendly club open to chess players of all ages and abilities. Members from beginners to experts can play in our internal leagues and we host regular blitz evenings – very fast and great fun! The club fields teams in competitions run by the Torbay Chess League and the Devon County Chess Association.

Club evenings are Tuesdays from September to April starting at 6.30 pm. The venue is The Assembly Room, Royal Seven Stars Hotel, The Plains, Totnes, TQ9 5DD

The 2026/27 season begins on Tuesday 15th September with the club AGM and a blitz tournamant.  Note: Due to issues with the availaibility of the room, the next two evenings will be on Wednesdays, 23rd and 30th September.  Then back to Tuesdays for the remainder of the season.

Also: casual chess open to everyone in the Totnes Cinema Café (27a High Street, Totnes, TQ9 5NP) from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm every Saturday throughout the year.  Club membership not required.

Annual membership fees for 2025/26

Standard fee      £30

Club Development fee   £50

Low waged/unemployed fee/student     £10

Juniors (u18)      Free

The Standard fee has been set at a level to cover the cost of room hire.  The Club Development fee is for those who voluntarily wish to pay a little more to support the club’s development, for example, the purchase of digital chess clocks.

To participate in Club competitions members must also be members of the English Chess Federation. Bronze member – £21.00 | Junior Bronze member – £7.50 | Free Junior Bronze member – £0.00 (for the first membership year only)

Parking for the Seven Stars: Victoria Street Car Park, Totnes TQ9 5XA.  Free parking after 6 pm.
